Festive workshops: Why don't you (Re) Design Xmas?

Festive workshops: Why don't you (Re) Design Xmas?

17 December 2011 at Fabrications in Hackney.

Rebecca Alderman (aka GirlwithBeads) and Barley Massey have got together to share some upcycled festive decoration ideas which feature in the book 'Why don't you (Re) Design Christmas? by Re Design.

"This book is very much in the 'Flat Broke' tradition,. But now the motivations are environmental as well as a wish to save money and make something personal. And the involvement of practising designers adds that touch of professional panache" (Barbara Chandler, Evening Standard)

Bring along your old plastic bags (think festive) and transform them into a Christmas wreath with Rebecca and pom pom snowball and chain decorations with Barley. To create a party atmosphere both the workshops will run at the same time and participants will swap tables at half time! We think this activity is suitable for adults and children from 8 years old (if accompanied by an adult)

There are 2 time slots to choose from: 12 - 1.30pm or 2 - 3.30pm.

Price: £20. Includes use of tool, materials and refreshments. BOOKING REQUIRED

(Parent or guardian accompanying a child come free but seating around workshop tables will be prioritised to workshop participants but feel free to stand behind or relax in seating nearby!)

Book signing also available!!

To book or for further info please call: +44 (0) 207 2758043

Nigel's Eco Market - Brighton - 27th August!

girlwithbeads is coming to Brighton on Saturday 27th August to take part in Nigel's Eco Market.

We are very excited to go to the seaside and have to chance to meet some new green minded folks.

New offerings from gwb include the popular baby & kids range of Tie-shirts, and a new design of the Flat Cap Bag with shoulder strap PLUS all the usual great goodies.

Here is some more info from Nigel's Eco Store:

WHAT IS IT?
Nigel’s Eco Market was born out of a desire to showcase innovative eco products, information and services from talented and creative individuals and companies – from green energy, to upcyclers, organic food, handmade clothing, handmade furniture and beautiful items for the home.

We wanted to take the best aspects of these and bring them together under one roof – to show that taking care of the planet doesn’t have to be difficult, or drab.

Organised by the award winning Nigel’s Eco Store, this will be a great event in Brighton where people can come with their friends to be inspired, to learn, and to buy from an eclectic selection of stalls.

WHEN IS IT?
The first Eco Market takes place on Saturday 27th August 2011.

WHERE IS IT?
Friends’ Meeting House, Ship Street, a popular venue in the heart of Brighton’s historic Lanes. It enjoys excellent passing trade, both from the Ship Street and Meeting House Lane entrances, and has a wonderful garden and café.

ENTRY is free!

CAFE
There will be a selection of delicious homemade sandwiches, cakes, juices and hot drinks available from the café, which is located in the adjoining room to the Lecture Room. The café is the perfect place to take a break, offering good food, music, friendly service and reasonable prices.

Hope you can make it!

Folly for a Flyover

Also on my weekend of fun, took a stroll down the canal to this excellent project -
Folly for a Flyover.

Hand-built by a team of volunteers with local, reclaimed and donated materials, the Folly has been built in the gap between the east and westbound traffic of the A12. Transforming the cavernous undercroft where the motorway crosses the Lea Navigation Canal, & is hosting a six week programme of waterside cinema, performance and play, including boat tours, screenings and drop-in workshops, produced by Assemble CIC in conjunction with CREATE 2011 and The Barbican Art Gallery, with support from muf architecture/art.

The construction is very interesting, it reminded me of James May's lifesize lego house, as the wooden blocks have holes drilled through the and are then strung together

Love the simple but stylish furniture - trestle tables and chairs beautifully made from broom handles and scrap wood. This chair reminds me of a horse!

Didn't manage to see any films but sampled the Folly's delicious bacon bagel plus the cheapest & best cuppa I've had in London in a while.

Museum of 51

don't think these people realise they are being watched....

A weekend of birthday fun included an inspiring trip to the Southbank which is currently celebrating 60 years since the Festival of Britain.

There is a fab *free* exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall, which has created a 'Museum of 51'.

A journey through the momentous Festival of Britain, a nationwide event that brought hope and progress to millions of people throughout the country following the hardships of WW2.

The Museum of 51 contains a vibrant collection of memorabilia, artworks, models, films and photographs as well as personal memories from those that took part.

Also along the southbank there are lots of things to see including a giant seagull, beach huts (each with its own theme & exhibition inside) a giant straw fox and a beach!!

Treasures from Trash Exhibition in Luton

girlwithbeads is featured in this excellent exhibition celebrating creative recycling from around the globe. Treasures from Trash highlights the rich potential for re-invention of the six main domestic waste materials: Paper, bottles, textiles, packing, rubber and cans. Find out the journey of each material, how we use and discard them. The ways in which they are being salvaged and re-invented as beautiful and useful re-usable objects.

Featuring Red and Recycled - The first year students on the Foundation Degree in Fashion and Textile Design at Barnfield College have created a fashion explosion of red jackets made from recycled objects.

Its free to visit and runs from 25th June - 25th September at Stockwood Discovery Centre, London Road, Luton LU1 4LX
